What is it?

Biofuels and liquefied natural gas (LNG) are being investigated for their possible emissions benefits and cost savings as alternatives to traditional petroleum-based bunkers. A range of biofuels are being looked at, including fuels made from sugar, starch, vegetable oils, and algae.

How it works

Alternative fuels can be readily substituted for regular bunker fuel, although engine modifications/refitting is typically required depending on the fuel used.
